CollaborationCollaborating with others can make your forest management efforts more effective, interesting and even fun. Project Learning Tree and the Colorado State Forest Service recently hosted a conference for organizations involved with improving forest health in Colorado. The goal was to foster an exchange of ideas and increase collaboration among these groups. CSFS Districts throughout the state invited a number of Tree Farmers who are active in local volunteer efforts to attend. These Tree Farmers and others were able to compare notes and discuss the most effective ways to promote environmental education and encourage more active forest management in their locales. We presented a video of a recent Tree Farm tour for children that exemplifies the effectiveness of collaborating with others. Tours are a great way to better educate the public and reinvigorate yourself by seeing your work through the eyes of young people. Mark Udall and representatives from federal, state and county land management agencies. _________________________________________ A History LessonBob Cain, R-2 Forest Health Team Leader, unearthed the attached historical file. It is a technical report from an USFS entomologist re: an ‘unprecedented’ bark beetle epidemic in Montana in the early 20th century. Point of note: Ultimately the Mountain Pine Beetle Dendroctonus monticola and the Black Hills Beetle Dendroctonus ponderosa, were to be discovered to be the same beetle and ultimately became Mountain Pine Beetle, Dendroctonus ponderosa If you know of any articles or reports concerning the treatment and results of more recent mountain pine beetle outbreaks, let us know and we'll feature them in a future Alert.
